Updating Color
/2022 Color Trends
Over the last two years many people have spent more time in their homes. Seeing the same walls and cabinets over and over has driven a desire for change. Some people have decided to purchase a new home and others of you are ready for an update. Refreshing the color in your home can make it feel like a new space.
Color sets the mood
One of the most basic concepts of design is that color sets the mood or tone. When you are picking a color for a room, you want to think about how you want to feel in that room. Anna Starmer provides some basics on colors and how they could make you feel in The Color Scheme Bible:
Pink: fun, lively, positive and feminine
Red: passionate, daring, intimate, comforting, stimulates appetite
Orange: stimulates creativity, evokes warmth and coziness
Yellow: welcoming, sunny, and linked to promoting intelligence
Green: tranquil, invigorating, restful and balancing
Blue: clear thinking, calm, meditative
Violet: stimulating, sexy; blue-violets are cooling, spiritual
60-30-10 rule
When applying color, the 60-30-10 rule is a great starting point. To apply this rule, you will think about what color you want your main color to be. About 60% of the color in a room goes on the walls which anchors the space. Your next color selection will be for 30% of the room. An accent wall, the furniture, and curtains can be part of this subset of your room. This color will add contrast. Lastly you can select an accent color which will be about 10% of the room. Decorative pieces are often in this color.
Just because you only have 3 colors in a room doesn’t mean you cannot have a variation of tones within those colors. Keeping your room to 3 colors will create balance within your space.
Picking a color
Now that we have walked through the framework of picking a color and balancing your space, let’s check out Benjamin Moore’s 2022 color of the year. October Mist 1495 is a soft sage which is often used to anchor a space. By using a green, you’re creating a tranquil space that brings the outdoors inside.
The Color Trends 2022 palette includes 14 hues that all work together. You’ll find some neutral colors like Steam, Collector’s Item, and Natural Linen in this collection. When you find a color you like, even when it appears neutral on a color card, try it out in your space. The lighting, furniture, carpet, and textiles in the space might lead the color to pull a certain color. We’ve all heard that a gray is never just a gray. It will pull blue or purple or even green. You want to see how a color looks in your space.
