Decorating for Christmas
/Trimming the Tree
Each year the Christmas season seems to get shorter and shorter. We create memories with our families and try to savor each and every moment. We bake cookies together, go to church throughout the advent season, hang the garland, and of course decorate the Christmas tree.
There are so many ways to decorate Christmas trees as I’m sure you saw at this year’s Fantasy of Trees. Let’s walk through a few of those methods to help give you inspiration.
Traditional trees
The nostalgic trees of years past are making a big play and coming back. These trees are often decorated in a mix of ornaments that are often sentimental in nature. Each ornament has meaning and is linked to a memory for your family. This year the traditional tinsel is making a big play for finishing touches on your trees. Tinsel is so affordable but can really make your tree shine.
Themed trees
These trees will always have a place. They can compliment the other decor in a room. You can have a gingerbread themed tree decorated in cute little characters with lots of different red and white ribbons. These trees can come with lots of different theming from a Christmas theme to the Tennessee Vols to even a favorite hobby like fishing. The sky is the limit on the theme of your tree.
One of my friends has a darling pink flocked tree in her daughter’s room. This tree is 4 feet tall and fully decorated in nutcracker ornaments. This theme is perfect for the little girl who loves Clara and all things nutcracker during the Christmas season. This tree also perfectly compliments the colors of the little girl’s room.
Lights
When selecting your tree, you want to make sure you pick the type of lights you want for your tree. White lights are traditional and great for all spaces. The coloring is quite neutral on these and helps brighten your space.
Colored lights bring joy to the eyes of children. They love all the colors but these trees often don’t provide as much light to a room. I have found wrapping the base of the tree with white lights helps lighten the overall color of the tree and helps the colored lights sparkle.
Of course in addition to the color of the lights, you can also consider if you want standard lights or dancing lights. Dancing lights often come with a box where you can control the rhythmic pattern of how the lights flicker. This can add a fun energy to your room.
Tree Skirt vs Tree Collar
In recent years tree collars have become more popular as an alternative to tree skirts. Live trees were always paired with a tree skirt as it protected the floor from pine needles and sap. Now that many people have artificial trees, tree collars can serve the purpose of completing your look. There are lots of options on the market or you can diy one from ideas on Pinterest.
If you have a tree skirt that has always been with your family, stick with it! Those special pieces bring back memories and make your home festive during this season.
