A Closet Where Everything Has Its Own Place
/Updating Your Closet
The birds are chirping, the flowers are beginning to bud, and we are getting in the swing of spring cleaning. As we are relocating things during our spring cleaning, many of us have come to realize that we need a bigger and better laid out closet to properly store things. We, at Hardwood Specialties, are here to help you design your perfect closet to make sure you can not only reach everything but also see it! We recently designed a dream closet that rivals some of the best.
Any beautiful room (let alone a closet) starts with beautiful floors.
When you love your floors, you want to see them! That means you are more likely to put things away. With our beautiful hardwood floors, you can quickly run a dust mop and the room looks clean in under a minute. I don’t know about you, but if something only takes me a minute, it doesn’t exactly feel like a chore! These beautiful floors are the starting point to make the whole room feel warm, welcoming, and put together.
Your closet should have the storage that you need.
A dream closet is a mixture of storage solutions from hanging bars, open shelving, cabinets, drawers, hooks, laundry hampers, and properly placed mirrors. We can help you think about the items you want to store in your closet to help you lay it out perfectly. We will talk through how you will use your closet to make sure it meets your needs.
This closet starts with a his and her side. How nice is that to not have a spouse’s belts and shoes meandering over to your side of the closet? Not only are there plenty of hanging racks on each side, but there are sections to help put away clothes properly: shirts hung on hangers on the top, pants draped across hanging racks on the bottom, and dresses and other longer items in a separate section. Of course, we also built in drawers for undergarments. A selection of glass door cabinets provide the perfect storage for sweaters or other items that should be guarded from dust. The glass allows you to see the inventory without having to open the doors and dig around.
A closet doesn’t stop at the clothes. Every outfit needs accessories. There are so many options for shoe storage. For this closet, we took advantage of the awkward corners and installed a turning “lazy susan” like shoe shelving on both “his” and “her” side. To complete the ensembles, “she” can access necklaces and other jewelry from the pull-out hanging accessory walls. These are great to pair with felted drawers for smaller accessories. We took advantage of the higher real estate in this closet by adding glass-enclosed cabinets. This is a great spot to display handbags. They are so pretty in the lit cabinets.
A well-thought-out closet helps you put away laundry.
Many people say the worst part of doing laundry is finishing the task and putting the clothes away. We often get delinquent on this step and piles of clean clothes can be found in laundry baskets, on a bedside bench, in a pile on the floor, or who knows where else. The root of this problem is that our closets aren’t laid out in a way to make it easy to put clothes away. The task is so much easier to fold and put away laundry if you have a place to do it! We put an island on one side of this closet. This allows ample space to put a laundry basket on a lower bench and fold/hang on hangers on a higher and more comfortable workstation. Having the room and flexibility to do this in the closet, encourages us to actually complete the last step of doing laundry and put the pieces away. We also have a second little secret in the closet… do you see it? There is an ironing board just right of the window on “her” side in its own little cabinet. How perfect is that to have an ironing board in the exact room that you need it? This makes it easier to iron clothes as you are putting them away or freshen them up with a quick press prior to getting dressed.
A closet is a place to get dressed for the day.
Your closet isn’t just a place to store your clothes, but it’s also an area to try on your ensembles and put them together. In addition to aiding in doing laundry, the center island helps put outfits together and try them on. Pieces can be selected and set on the island. The lower bench is great to sit on while putting on shoes. Without this bench, you would need a chair available which would be more likely to cause stubbed toes. Ouch! The surfaces of the bench and counter height island are finished in a beautiful butcher block hardwood. Like the floor, this is easy to clean and always looks sharp.
Did you also notice the “his” and “hers” dressing counters? Each side was designed slightly different for its uses. “His” has 3 special drawers for knick-knacks, a lint roller, shoehorn, etc. You can also see a catch-all tray for when pockets are emptied in the evening. “Her” side has a small mirror and counter space as she wanted to be able to store lotions and perfumes.
You can never forget a full-length mirror for a closet.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve had those closets that didn’t have a full-length mirror. I laugh thinking back about how I found myself standing on a chair to see how the shoes paired with the outfit. I’m probably lucky that I didn’t fall and hurt myself. We can help you make sure you find the perfect spot to place a mirror without sacrificing the valuable closet space.
Lighting makes everything look better.
Have you ever been in a dressing room and thought you looked like a rock star only to come home and hate the outfit in your own home? Lighting is often to blame. When lighting a room, always start with making sure there is ample light with fixtures like in ceiling lights. Then look at adding a special light fixture to boost the atmosphere. This sparkly Schoenberg crystal chandelier can make any woman feel like a queen as she gets ready. This closet made sure there wasn’t a single dark corner for a lonely sock to hide by utilizing in-cabinet lighting. Even the top row of cabinets have lighting!
As you look at this closet, what are some of your favorite things? What are things you would like us to help you build into your storage solutions so that your spring cleaning can be more productive this year?
